Advancements in Metro Optical Network Architectures and Technologies

This tutorial reviews the current and emerging multi-service metropolitan optical network architectures, and the key applications that are motivating their WDM evolution. Unlike, LH WDM transport, where the main design objective has been to maximize the capacity and reach of networks with typically well-defined topologies, MANs call for cost-sensitive, open architectures that allow for service flexibility. We evaluate in detail the innovation in metro WDM system design, as well as the most important current and emerging technologies and their systems implications.

Topics include:

  • Network WDM architecture evolution addressing metro service, and scalability needs.
  • Key metro WDM applications; fiber exhaust, in traditional circuit-switched SONET/SDH rings, or storage (SAN) extension, data (Ethernet) services, such as broadband access and video delivery (VoD)
  • Functionality, characteristics, and challenges of regional, and access metro networks
  • Metro WDM needs for service flexibility, operational simplicity, and low cost solutions
  • Mmetro-optimized WDM system current design innovation, and performance characteristics
  • Metro transport technologies, including protection, "sub-wavelength" grooming (e.g., VC, GFP, RPR), and management (OAM&P)
  • Current metro optical and WDM technologies (OADM, EDFA, DCU, FEC, CWDM)
  • Evaluation of the most promising emerging metro technologies; including reconfigurable OADMs, tunable lasers, 10 Gb/s pluggables, electronic coding and processing ( FEC, EDE), and their the implications for the future metro networks based on conclusions of related techno-economical analysis of the related architectures - including low-cost OEO vs OADM.
Biography
Loukas (Lucas) Paraschis is a member of the Optical Networking, Advanced Technology and Network Planning (CTO group) at Cisco Systems, responsible for the next generation optical technologies and transport architectures for multi-service optical networks. At Cisco, he has primarily worked on metropolitan WDM networks, 10 and 40 Gb/s optical interfaces, IP optical inter-networking architectures, and techno-economical network analysis. Prior to Cisco, Loukas concluded his graduate studies at Stanford University (PhD in Applied Physics 1999, MS in EE 1998), and worked as an R&D engineer. He has (co)authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications in technical journals and conferences, including one keynote, and 7 invited presentations, many technical reports, and 7 patent disclosures. He has also been a Guest Editor for the Journal of Lightwave Technology (2004), a reviewer for OSA, and IEEE LEOS and ComSoc journals, an invited panelist in National Science Foundation (NSF) Reviews (2003), technical symposia, and advanced workshops, and member of IEEE and SPIE conferences organizing committees, and the Broadnets 2004 panels co-chair. Loukas was born and raised in Athens, Greece, where he completed his undergraduate studies.

Wireless Broadband: Services, Networks, and Management

Wireless technologies are playing an increasingly important role in the implementation and proliferation of broadband services and networks. This tutorial will discuss the technology, standards, and status of each of the wireless service offerings in the access and customer premises / home networks, and their impact on wireless broadband implementation. Although there is no commercially available wireless access point that successfully handles multimedia QoS today, we will discuss the standards and approaches to resolve this issue in upcoming access points. The QoS issue in wireless is more than multimedia distribution. There are other issues such as rate, range, and robustness, as well as interference in clients due to multiple channels and access points, which will be addressed. Security, which has much broader significance in the wireless and mobile networks, will be addressed. Network management is covered from the telecommunications concept and implementation of SNMP management. Examples of a few commercial systems in the area of wireless network products will be treated.

Biography
Mani Subramanian has over thirty-five years of telecommunications experience in academic, research, and corporate institutions. Mani is the founder of two companies involved in broadband access technologies. Mani is currently an adjunct professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, and a consultant on telecommunications. He has been previously associated with Purdue University, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Bell Communications Research, and Racal Datacom. He was elected to the Board of the OSI Network Management Forum in 1990 and, as its Technical Director, was responsible for the development of the first version of OSI Network Management Protocol Specifications. His comprehensive textbook on network management, "Network Management: Principles and Practice," is used in many countries and special editions have been printed in India and Republic of China, including a Chinese translation. He is currently involved in the research on last-mile access systems at Georgia Institute of Technology. Mani holds several patents, and has authored numerous articles in the fields of communications, lasers, networking, network management, and software systems as well as a textbook on network management. He received Bellcore's Best award for leading a major software operations system development. Mani can be reached at [email protected].
